Hannukah Additional Information:

Hanukkah, which is also spelled "Chanukah" or "Hanukah," is a Jewish holiday commemorating the victory of the traditional Jews over the Greeks during the mid-second century B.C.E. It is also a holiday that celebrates the "Miracle of Lights," which took place when the Holy Temple was rededicated and the sparse amount of oil available lasted for eight days.

In remembrance of the rededication of the temple, the Hanukkah celebration takes place every year in November or December. One of the central elements of this celebration is the Hanukkah menorah, a nine-branched candelabra that symbolizes the seven-branched menorah used during the rededication of the Holy Temple.  Eight of the candle holders on the Hanukkah menorah represent the eight nights of the Chanukah celebration, and the ninth holds the "shamash," the candle that lights the others.

Although Hanukkah is actually considered a minor festival within the Jewish faith, the holiday is one of the most well-known Jewish holidays -- and the Chanukah menorah is one of the most recognized Judaic symbols.

Over the eight-day celebration, one candle from the Hanukkah menorah is lit at a time. During this time, gifts are exchanged while lighting the Chanukah menorah candles.

In addition, the ceremony of lighting the Hanukkah menorah serves as a time to reinforce the basic Judaic tenets of:

  • Dedication
  • Perseverance
  • Generosity
  • Remembrance

At Gallery Judaica, you will find a wide variety of Chanukah menorah designs to select from, as well as other traditional Hanukkah items such as the dreidel. Although this four-sided spinning top was originally designed as a toy for Jewish children, our gallery offers sculptural, art-piece dreidels that make a wonderful Hanukkah gift.

If you are looking for a beautiful Hanukkah menorah, dreidel or other items for your Hanukkah celebration, Gallery Judaica is sure to have just what you are looking for. Visit our Hanukah page to search through our extensive inventory. Or, if you need help finding the item you need, feel free to call us at (888) 311-3636. We will be happy to help!
