The holiday of Passover commemorates the Exodus of the Jews from ancient Egypt. According to the Torah, or Hebrew Bible, the Jews were slaves under Egyptian rule, until Moses -- a Jew raised in the Egyptian royal family -- freed them from bondage. Because the Jews had very little time to flee, there was not enough time for their bread to rise, so they ate unleavened bread during their escape and passage through the Red Sea (or Sea of Reeds.) It is for this reason that Jewish people eat ''matzah,'' a crisp, unleavened bread, during the eight days of Passover.
On the first two nights of Passover, Jewish people take part in a ceremonial meal called a ''Seder.'' A Seder plate is used to display six symbolic items, which play important roles in the Seder -- lettuce, horseradish, shank bone, ''haroset,'' egg and parsley. Our collection of Seder plates includes contemporary pieces in fused glass, aluminum, painted wood and ceramic. |
