Ketubah Additional Information:

When it comes time for you to buy a ketubah, there are several things you will need to take into consideration. For example, your tradition may require an Orthodox ketubah text, whereas more liberal Jewish communities allow for a more modern ketubah text.  If you choose the Orthodox option, most artists offer an accompanying English text, which appears alongside the Traditional Aramaic text.  In most cases, the English is not a direct translation, rather they are words chosen by the artist to reflect the couple's union. Therefore, the English text that appears on these ketubahs will vary by artist. "Mixing and matching" texts is generally not an option.

If an Orthodox ketubah is what you are looking for, Here are some interesting facts about the Traditional Aramaic text:

  • Traditional Aramaic (with or without English) is the only text accepted within the Traditional Orthodox Ashkenazic Jewish community
  • Many Persian rabbis are comfortable with the traditional text
  • The traditional text was originally designed to protect the Jewish wife's finances
  • Talk to your rabbi to discuss which text you need

Our selection of ketubahs, including our Orthodox ketubah offerings, need to be filled in with your names, parents' names, wedding date and wedding location -- usually before your wedding ceremony,  Our clients often take advantage of our Ketubah Personalization option, where the ketubah artist, or one of our calligraphers, fills in this information in a style that matches the print on the document. If you buy a ketubah with our personalization option, you will need to fill out our Ketubah Personalization Worksheet -- and if you have purchased an Orthodox ketubah, we strongly recommend that you show the ketubah text to your rabbi, and have your rabbi help you with your worksheet.  If your tradition does not require an Orthodox Aramaic text, and you are interested in other text options, consider the following:

  • Conservative Text - features the Traditional text with the addition of the "Lieberman clause," which states that the man or the woman may involve the Jewish court if the marriage is ended
  • Egalitarian Text - used with more liberal Jewish communities and includes a modern Hebrew and modern English section
  • Non-Denominational Text - offered by some of our ketubah artists to meet the needs of couples who do not wish to have religious indications on their marriage document
